Vintage CakesA charming collection of updated recipes for both classic and forgotten cakes, from a timeless yellow birthday cake with chocolate buttercream frosting, to the new holiday standard, Gingerbread Icebox Cake with Mascarpone Mousse, written by a master baker and coauthor of Rustic Fruit Desserts.

Make every occasion—the annual bake sale, a birthday party, or even a simple Sunday supper—a celebration with this charming collection of more than 50 remastered classics.

Each recipe in Vintage Cakes is a confectionery stroll down memory lane. After sifting through her treasure trove of cookbooks and recipe cards, master baker and author Julie Richardson selected the most inventive, surprising, and just plain delicious cakes she could find. The result is a delightful and delectable time capsule of American baking, with recipes spanning a century.

Each cake has been expertly tested and retooled using the best ingredients and most up-to-date techniques. With precise and careful guidance, Richardson guides home bakers—whether total beginners or seasoned cooks—toward picture-perfect meringues, extra-creamy frostings, and lighter-than-air chiffons.

A few of the dreamy cakes that await: a chocolatey Texas Sheet Cake as large and abundant as its namesake state, the boozy Not for Children Gingerbread Bundt cake, and the sublime Lovelight Chocolate Chiffon Cake with Chocolate Whipped Cream. With recipes to make Betty Crocker proud, these nostalgic and foolproof sweets rekindle our love affair with cakes.

Julie RichardsonJulie Richardson is the owner and head baker of Baker & Spice, a small-batch bakery and café in Portland, Oregon. Julie is a graduate of the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, New York, and the co-author of Rustic Fruit Desserts. Her sweet tooth led her to open her first bakery, Good Earth, in Ketchum, Idaho. Upon moving to Portland, she fell in love with the farms and fruits of the Pacific Northwest and launched Baker & Spice from a stall at the farmers’ market in 1999. You can find Julie most days baking up cakes, croissants, and pies at Baker & Spice or teaching classes up the street at Sweetwares, her retail bakeware shop. When Julie is not baking, she can be found digging in her garden. She lives in Portland with her husband, Matt, and their many four-legged friends.

Bake It in a Cupcake 50 Treats with a Surprise Inside
Cupcakes are good; but 50 different cupcakes with a surprise treat baked inside them are even better!

Bake It in a Cupcake takes the cupcake craze to the next level, operating on the logical assumption that the only thing better than a delicious cupcake is one with a sweet or savory treat—mini pie, fruit, chocolate kiss, breakfast cereal, baklava, cheese, even egg—hidden inside it. As the saying goes, it’s what’s on the inside that counts.

Based on Megan Seling’s popular blog Bake it in a Cake (,Bake It in a Cupcake includes 50 recipes—many accompanied by color photographs and step-by-step instructions so that even inexperienced bakers will find it easy to make these fun, eye-catching, and unique desserts. Recipes are organized into chapters by what’s inside, whether that’s another baked good, fruit, or your favorite candy.

Bakers of all ages and experience levels will enjoy making—and eating—Seling’s delectable filled creations like Banana Pudding Pie Cupcakes with Butterscotch Frosting, Miniature Cherry Pie Dark Chocolate Cupcakes with Vanilla Bean Frosting and Mission Fig-Spiced Cupcakes with Vanilla Frosting.

MEGAN SELING is a writer and baking enthusiast. Although she grew up in a family that loved making pies, cookies, and cakes—her great-grandma was known as the neighborhood “Cookie Lady”—Megan’s own youthful kitchen exploits usually involved doctoring up boxed cake mixes or eating frosting straight out of the can. She lives in Seattle, WA with her husband and cat.

Cake Ladies Celebrating a Southern Tradition

Celebrate a sweet Southern tradition!

In 2010, Jodi Rhoden traveled the South, interviewing Cake Ladies and documenting their stories and recipes.

“As I listened to the cake ladies tell of their struggles and their joys, I found over and over that it is love, first and foremost, that motivates them, and that love is the one essential ingredient to baking beautiful and delicious cakes.”–Jodi Rhoden

In the south, cake ladies are the ones with the skills and heart to bring a little sweetness to life’s big moments–potlucks, christenings, weddings, funerals–and their communities treasure and depend upon them. Modern-day cake lady Jodi Rhoden shines a spotlight on this great tradition with profiles of 15 diverse southeastern women who wear the term with pride. Each profile features a bite of that woman’s “life in cake,” and includes luscious photos along with at least one signature cake recipe, from classic Vanilla Almond Pound and Hummingbird cakes to Mississippi Mud Cake and Vegan Red Velvet Cupcakes.

JODI RHODEN is a mom, writer, baker, blogger, and food activist based in Asheville, NC. Jodi owns Short Street Cakes, a popular bakery specializing in natural, from scratch, traditional Southern cakes, in West Asheville, which she began out of her small home kitchen in 2006. She is a food activist and member of The Southern Foodways Alliance as well as a board member of the Bountiful Cities Project. Jodi is the author of Great Cupcake Makeover, one of 12 booklets in Craft-In (Lark, 2010) and a contributor to The Green Market Baking Book (Sterling, January 2011).
